The Evolutionary Intelligence of Wood

The Spring Equinox Version

Among the brightening days of the Vernal Equinox, light and dark meet within a suspended three-day threshold. A time out of time, where neither holds dominion. A brief portal through which we might enter as one version of ourselves, only to emerge as another.

Equinox comes as a pause in the seasonal crossing.
Nature has little interest in remaining here.

From Equinox onwards, we will be among the days of the quickening. From here, the light grows towards the Summer Solstice, pushing the green kingdom across the landscape with it. An extraordinary pulse of becoming, with the pause of Equinox a necessary reset before life takes up direction again.

Spring belongs to the element of Wood, sassy, bright, forceful and ready to make its move. There is nothing vague in the birthing of trees.

From the moment of its germination in the warming soil, Wood begins to differentiate from the floating whole of Winter’s dream state. The root moves down to grip the darkness while the shoot rises brave into the light. Each making a responsive choice based on environment, weather, light, shade, obstruction and available space.

Growth acquires direction as it grows.

Even now, as we lean into our capacity to perceive possibility and to organise ourselves towards it, we are Wood. Visionaries, architects, directors with the courage to become something not yet fully formed. Flexible enough of mind and belief to perceive opportunity and invitation, courageous enough to branch and branch again - even when we aren't sure where it will lead.

Spring's bright energy is sold as a given. Crafted from romanticised new beginnings and vast expectations, there for the taking. Yet not all change is evolution.

It is easy to be extraordinarily busy with Spring without knowing what that busyness actually serves. Intent on organising a whole life around drowning out the noise of our misalignment.

We can grow without asking: from what, towards what, and in service of what?

Here is the hot shadow of Wood spinning around within itself. Movement trapped in an outdated direction. Ambition without integrity or meaning. Expansion without pause for reflection or integration. A great flourishing of things with no true organising centre.

Our saving grace is to lean into the trees. The intelligence of Wood itself is a branch that bends, twists and becomes an art form by virtue of whatever life has placed in its path. It carries a strong enough sense of itself, and enough trust in the great river of things, to pivot and change without fuss. Never once losing sight of its conversation with the light.

Healthy Wood finds direction through a series of spring-like reorientations, responding to opportunity and possibility without forgetting meaning or purpose. Each reorientation enlarges the field of vision from which the next step becomes visible.

Mature Wood perceives.

It remains responsive to changing conditions while sensing the deeper direction of its growth from somewhere else altogether. Contemplation in Spring is not separate from evolution; it is how direction clarifies.

And as spring's horizon widens, another understanding emerges: none of us becomes who we are in isolation. When we see clearly, we understand we are the forest and the trees.

The apparent individuality of the green kingdom is in fact an exquisite collaboration among innumerable relationships, seen and unseen. The becoming of anything here in the green realm belongs as much to itself as to everything it encounters along the way.

Through this lens, the question Who am I becoming? widens into What am I becoming in relationship with?

Suddenly we are beyond the familiar territory of Instagram self-development and into something more ecological and far more participatory.

The seed of us germinated by virtue of what had already happened in dark, where Winter's unseen work gathered itself into potential. Spring now arrives as the directional force through which that potential takes form. Here we allow what has gathered inwardly to differentiate into the bright green of conscious expression.

And so the question for the Equinox threshold comes straight from the wisdom of the trees: What asks to grow through the knowledge another year lived, and what direction will I give it?
