At the risk of being seen

Beltane 2026. The beginning of Summer.
November 7th, 2026 | 8:53 pm AEDT

Beltane breaks ground at the hinge between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, when the trees are alive with sap and the buds, held within the protective architecture of confinement, containment and the difficulty of birth, prepare for their purpose. Sun's lengthening days will ask the tender newness of the flower to unfold into an uncertain garden. Its exposure and vulnerability are given in exchange for its evolutionary necessity, as nature requires it to undertake the terrifying journey of exposing its very heart to the world. Every flowering is an invitation into relationship with the wider ecology, one in which something privately cultivated must step into the wild, wide current of the whole.

Summer opens here among such days; the green kingdom meets ignition, and all life prepares to express itself through myriad forms of warmth, passion and creativity. While the Northern Samhain opens the gates to the ancestors and the mysteries of dissolution, Beltane opens the gates to incarnation, desire, play and the generative forces of nature. Two thresholds of the same mystery of life entering form and falling back into the unseen, part of a larger cosmic respiration that moves us from inward to outward and back again. From emerging bud to the exhilaration and terror of unfoldment, and the surrender back to dust and bone.

As Beltane dawns, the sun's chariot also heralds the elemental meeting point of Wood and Fire and, according to the inverted Solar Terms, the beginning of Summer. A seasonal threshold where the expansive, directional energy of spring begins to mature into the warmth, expression and fullness of the summer cycle.

The spring flows silently, cherishing its slender stream.
The trees cast their shadows on the water, loving the gentle sunlight.
A young lotus has barely lifted its pointed tip,
And already a dragonfly has come to rest upon it.

In Taoist philosophy, Wood's spring mothers Fire's summer in one of the most beautiful relationships of the solar year. Here spring's potential is transformed into outward expression, where Wood grows, Fire radiates. Where Wood is the pioneer, Fire is the illuminator.

As the parent energy, Wood offers growth, direction, vision, determination, flexibility and the capacity to initiate change. Wood wants nothing other than to grow. Fire transforms that energy into joy, love, enthusiasm, connection, warmth, consciousness and emotional expression. It wants nothing more than to experience life fully.

While Wood must generate upward thrust through the hard soil of Winter, Fire spreads that energy across the kingdom, transforming spring's ripening growth into its fruits, flowers and seeds. A tree spends its life gathering sunlight so that it might one day be the fire that cooks the food, warms the people and penetrates the night with its light.

Beltane meets us at the junction where Wood sparks Fire, where what has been privately cultivated readies itself to be shared with the world. A moment after the safety of preparation has been acknowledged, and just before the risk of expression is taken.

Wood is the courage to grow towards your own light, to become who you are, and it has brought you to this threshold. Fire will burn you, transform you and change you forever, making of you a light show, a celebration of life. But like all meaningful change, there is also peril, and something of the old self must be relinquished if we are to step into this new skin. At its crux, Beltane's fires invite us to change and grow by willingly surrendering the safety of remaining unseen.

We cannot remain forever in preparation, refining, learning and waiting. Even as the old identities that have sheltered us grow too small, an understanding, capacity, creative impulse or way of being asks to be lived. The threshold of expression requires us to release control over how this offering will be received. This is the flowering in us, where what opens here is offered to the world, and the world becomes capable of changing it.

And so Beltane's fires are lit into an awakening world in which Wood has prepared the way. An expression of the union of all complementary forces — God and Goddess, Earth and Sun, receptivity and vitality, desire drawing our inner potential into relationship with life. The Sacred Marriage by any other name.

The crack and hiss of the Beltane fire brings Wood's vision forward, acting as midwife to the birth of an idea, the awakening of love, the courage to create, the willingness to bring something sacred of yourself forward.

Wood gave you the direction, discipline and determination to pursue, and Fire the enthusiasm, warmth and connection to bring yourself into the world through it. Beltane is its symbolic union, generative and moving beyond individual expression towards relationship, participation and meaningful connection. Here something cultivated meets the transformative presence of something beyond itself.

Wood, you see, gives us something meaningful to burn for, as Fire gives Wood a reason to grow.

In these times of profound cultural shift, this individual flowering carries a significance beyond the boundaries of our own lives. Just as a living ecosystem depends on the unique contributions and relationships of its community, our collective renewal depends on our diversity, and our willingness to offer ourselves in a meaningful contribution of it.

Beyond a celebration of fertility and new beginnings, Beltane is the courage to offer our inner life to the transforming flame. The risk to the unfolding flower is the exposure of its delicate heart, the centre from which it emerges and returns, and all that it has spent so long nurturing. Yet with its opening comes the visiting pollinator bearing the promise of new life, the perfume carried across the garden, and the love awakened in a passer-by who pauses to gaze into its centre in a moment of shared rapture. What was cultivated in the shelter of the bud has entered the living world, where every encounter carries the possibility of something neither the flower nor the world could have imagined.
